Karadeniz Ereğli Museum serves in a structure known as Halil Paşa Mansion, in a ground floor + 3-storey, middle hall plan type and masonry structure. Halil Pasha Mansion was built by Halil Pasha Karamahmutoğlu, who was a sanjak (mirimiran), in the late 19th century (approximately 1870's) during the reign of Sultan Abdulhamid II. In the mansion, which was built on the foundation of an old church on Bozhane Yali Caddesi, the ancient spoliate materials collected from the buildings belonging to the Roman Period were used as chapolyan (reused), especially in the facade decoration.
The building, which was used as a secondary school and girls' vocational high school for a period, remained unattended for a long time and was heavily damaged, was allocated to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in 1989 for restoration. After about 10 years of restoration work, the museum was opened on 01.08.1998.
